Visit Vocal

Vocal is the publishing platform Creatd built, ran through every stage of its growth, and still runs today. Writers publish long-form stories, find readers and get paid; brands pay to reach those readers. It is the business the rest of Creatd was built around.

What Vocal does

Vocal is a place to publish writing and get paid for it. A writer opens a free account, writes in Vocal's editor, and submits the story to one of the platform's communities, each devoted to a subject: fiction, poetry, film, food, finance, parenting, mental health and dozens more. Readers find stories through those communities and through search. Writers earn from reads, from tips, from prize money in Vocal's Challenges, and, since August 2024, from paid subscriptions to their own work, on which Vocal keeps a 10% processing fee. As of September 2026, about 6 million creator accounts have been registered on the platform (company data).

Vocal+ is the paid membership. Introduced in 2019 as an annual plan and offered monthly from September 2019 at $9.99, it gives members better earning rates and a set of tools the free tier does not have. Vocal+ passed 10,000 members in December 2020, 25,000 in May 2021 and 100,000 in November 2021. Memberships are one of the two revenue lines Creatd reports for Vocal; the other is brand advertising through Vocal for Brands.

Vocal for Brands is the studio side of the business. It puts a brand's story in front of the readers most likely to care about it, using the platform's first-party audience data and human editorial judgment rather than display advertising. The best-known format is the sponsored Challenge: a themed writing contest that a brand underwrites. Moleskine's Little Black Book Challenge in early 2021 carried a $20,000 grand prize and drew a record number of submissions; Decider.com, part of the New York Post Digital Network, sponsored a $10,000 Challenge the same quarter; Memberful and Bright Cellars followed. In early 2023 Creatd reported that the agency had signed its first campaign close to $1 million, with Ollie Pets, and had run campaigns for National Geographic and WeightWatchers.

How writers earn

Vocal has added a way to earn roughly every year since launch, and the sequence explains the product. Read earnings came first: a story earns as it is read, at a higher rate for Vocal+ members. Tips let a reader send a writer money from the bottom of a story, through Stripe, since 2019. Challenges, from January 2020, turned prize money into a regular part of the platform; by 2021 a Challenge underwritten by Fiskars carried a $20,000 prize pool with $15,000 to the winner, and the Members-Only Challenge with Memberful, the membership software company owned by Patreon, offered a $32,500 pool and a $22,500 grand prize, the largest in Vocal's history at the time.

Creator Bonuses, introduced in February 2021, gave Vocal a way to reward individual stories directly, on both the free and paid tiers. Pledges, released in December 2021, let readers make recurring monthly payments to a writer they follow. The Ambassador Program, from May 2021, paid creators for referring new Vocal+ members and was the platform's first referral feature. Paid creator subscriptions, Exclusive Stories, followed in August 2024, with Vocal keeping a 10% processing fee. Each feature moved a little more of the money on the platform from Vocal's own pocket to transactions between readers and writers, which is where Vocal wants it.

How it was built

Vocal launched on November 30, 2016, inside Jerrick Media Holdings, the company that later renamed itself Creatd. It opened with six subject communities and a monetisation model that paid writers on readership. By its first anniversary it had passed 100,000 creator accounts and nearly 30 communities. Vocal 2.0, a full re-platforming with a new editor, faster moderation and Stripe integration for tipping, shipped in September 2019, when the platform had about 470,000 creators. Challenges arrived in January 2020. Vocal passed 1 million registered creators in May 2021, 1.1 million that August and 1.5 million by May 2022; its 40th community, Interview, opened in November 2021.

The product kept moving. Comments arrived in May 2022 and a moderation partnership with Microsoft's Two Hat the same month. The iOS app was released in July 2022 and the Android app in October 2022. Paid creator subscriptions, called Exclusive Stories, launched in August 2024. In July 2026 Vocal shipped what Creatd described as its most significant set of updates in years: a rebuilt writing editor, verified-human publishing as the standard for the platform, and a creator economy realigned around original human work, with read earnings concentrated on Vocal+ members.

Keeping it safe for brands

Vocal has moderated every story before publication since the beginning, using human curators assisted by software. It is why brands that would not buy space next to unmoderated user content will sponsor a Vocal Challenge, and family-oriented creators from WHE Agency were brought onto the platform in 2022 in part because of it. In May 2022 Vocal integrated Two Hat's AI-assisted, human-led moderation technology, then owned by Microsoft, to speed the review of a growing volume of submissions and comments.

The July 2026 update took the same idea further. Vocal now publishes only work from writers who have passed identity verification, and it rejects AI-generated submissions. Read earnings were concentrated on Vocal+ members, which Creatd said improves the durability and unit economics of the business, and the platform itself runs on a leaner, more automated cost base. Creatd's argument is that as synthetic content floods the open web, verified human writing becomes scarce, and scarce things are worth more to readers, writers and advertisers. Vocal's chief executive put it as a shift from who can generate the most content to who can create trust at scale.

Why Creatd owns it

Vocal is the one business Creatd built rather than bought, and it is where Creatd's operating know-how comes from. The company's design, data and technology teams were assembled to build and grow Vocal; those same teams later built the storefront and operating stack for Plant Camp and the shared systems behind Flyte and Creatd's other companies. The audience data Vocal accumulates has been the starting point for every brand campaign Creatd has run and for the consumer brands it once owned. Creatd describes Vocal as its flagship operating asset and a core technology, media and brand-services business.

Vocal also does a second job. Creatd has said the brand-services work gives it a practical way to evaluate companies before pursuing deeper opportunities with them, including acquisitions. A brand that has run a campaign on Vocal is a brand whose numbers Creatd has already seen.

For an investor in CRTD, Vocal matters for three reasons. It is consolidated, so its memberships and brand revenue appear in Creatd's reported results, audited for two consecutive years. It is the asset Creatd has said it may spin out with its own balance sheet, and the standalone framework Creatd has outlined for that depends on Vocal's product being strong and defensible. And it is the network through which Creatd expects to connect other creator platforms, starting with the September 2026 investment in C2 Live. Creatd's chief executive has called Vocal the company's most valuable asset.

Vocal, Inc.

On July 31, 2023 the platform moved into its own company, Vocal, Inc., so that it could raise capital directly. That September Vocal, Inc. launched a Regulation Crowdfunding round with a $1.235 million target, and in October 2024 it completed an independent 409A valuation ahead of a planned private investment round. At that point Creatd held about 40% of Vocal and had intended for it to operate independently.

In May 2026 Creatd's board and the requisite Vocal shareholders approved an equity realignment: a repurchase of Vocal common shares and Series A preferred interests from current and former stakeholders, priced off the 409A valuation, that brought Creatd's ownership to 51%. The board's reasoning was that Vocal had been developed, funded and largely owned by Creatd throughout, and that as part of Creatd's capital markets strategy it should be positioned as a majority-owned core asset. Creatd now consolidates Vocal's results. In September 2026 the board approved a premium tender offer for the Vocal shares held by the Regulation Crowdfunding investors, a further step in simplifying the capital structure.

What to watch

Creatd has said it is evaluating a capital markets transaction that would spin Vocal out as a standalone entity with its own balance sheet, giving it a capital structure to raise money and acquire other platforms. Creatd has described that framework as theoretical and early-stage, with no assurance that any transaction will be completed. The September 2026 investment in C2 Live, a livestreaming platform, was made with Vocal's communities explicitly in mind. Anyone following Vocal should read Creatd's quarterly reports for membership and brand revenue, and the releases on this site for product changes. For founders of creator platforms, Vocal is also the clearest sign of what Creatd wants: communities with identifiable audiences, moderated content that brands will pay to sit beside, and products that pay creators directly.
