Orbit is a social app for retail investors: a place to discuss stocks, learn and follow the market, built for the small-cap space. Creatd bought a majority of Orbit Media, LLC in August 2022, took it through beta, and spun it out in December 2023, keeping an 18% interest and a service relationship.
What Orbit does
Orbit is an app for stock market investors. It combines a community with tools and content for learning, tracking markets and trading, with a particular focus on small-cap stocks and, later, cryptocurrencies. It was designed to aggregate in one place what retail investors otherwise piece together across message boards, chat groups and news sites: educational resources, discussion, market data and the investors themselves. Orbit was Creatd's second app after Vocal.
Why Creatd bought it
Creatd's chairman had spent years watching how retail investors talk to each other about small-cap stocks, and how much misinformation persists in the forums where those conversations happen. He has long argued for direct, compliant communication between management teams and shareholders, and for social platforms that keep that discussion fair. Orbit was built for exactly that, in the market where Creatd itself trades. Creatd also had something Orbit needed: a technology team that had built and moderated a large publishing community, and audiences it could put the app in front of. Creatd said it expected to distribute Orbit through its own network and platform communities.
What happened under Creatd
Creatd completed the purchase of a majority stake in Orbit Media, LLC on August 5, 2022. Orbit had just finished its beta testing programme. On September 27, 2022 Creatd opened a pre-release waitlist and released the beta to the public, with full distribution planned for the fourth quarter and monetisation, through a suite of premium features, planned for the second quarter of 2023. Creatd's technology and data teams completed the development work for the beta release. Orbit was one of the assets Creatd named in 2022 and 2023 when it discussed spinning subsidiaries out to shareholders.
How Creatd exited
On December 11, 2023 Creatd spun out Orbit Media LLC as an independent company. The spin-out took Orbit off Creatd's consolidated balance sheet and reduced its operating expense. Creatd's release put its remaining interest at 18% and said it maintains royalty and service agreements with its minority positions, an approach it had used two months earlier with Brave and Basis. Orbit, under chief executive Nicholas Scibilia, planned to release its app on iOS and Android in the first quarter of 2024 and was considering a Regulation Crowdfunding campaign.
What Creatd kept
An 18% interest in Orbit Media LLC and the royalty and service agreements that go with it. Orbit is a private company and Creatd does not publish its results; the public record on it is the releases cited below. Creatd's Form S-1 lists Orbit among its past acquisitions.
